10-Day Rwanda Road Trip Itinerary (Self-Drive Adventure)
Ten days is the sweet spot for a Rwanda road trip. It’s long enough to cover gorillas, Lake Kivu, rainforest, and a savanna safari, without feeling rushed between stops. This itinerary follows a simple loop out of Kigali and back, built for anyone driving themselves.

Day 1–2: Kigali
Pick up your rental car and ease into the trip. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, walk through Kimironko Market, and grab dinner in the Kimihurura area. Use day two for any last errands — SIM card, cash withdrawal, and double-checking your gorilla trekking permit if you haven’t booked it already.

Day 3: Kigali → Musanze
A smooth, paved 2.5-hour drive north into the hills. Check into your lodge in Musanze and spend the afternoon at the Dian Fossey exhibit or relaxing before an early trekking start.
Tip: Gorilla treks start early, often with a 7 am briefing at park headquarters. Stay as close to Kinigi as you can to avoid a pre-dawn drive.
Day 4: Volcanoes National Park
Gorilla trekking day. Treks can run 2–8 hours round trip depending on where the gorilla family is that morning, so keep the rest of the day open. If you did gorillas the day before, use this day for golden monkey tracking instead — it’s a shorter, easier half-day activity and a good add-on.
Day 5: Musanze → Lake Kivu
Drive roughly 2 hours west to Rubavu (Gisenyi) or Kibuye. Both sit on Lake Kivu; Rubavu has more of a resort-town feel, while Kibuye is quieter. Spend the afternoon by the water — this is your rest day after two active days near the volcanoes.
Day 6: Lake Kivu
A full free day. Options include a boat trip to Napoleon Island, a coffee farm tour, kayaking, or simply doing nothing at all. Worth building slack into a 10-day loop — this is the easiest place to do it.
Day 7: Lake Kivu → Nyungwe Forest
The Congo Nile Trail road south is scenic but winding, so budget 2–3 hours of careful driving. Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your forest lodge.
Day 8: Nyungwe Forest National Park
Choose between chimpanzee tracking (early start, moderately strenuous) or the canopy walkway plus a shorter forest trail (more relaxed). Both are worthwhile; if time is tight, the canopy walk is easier to combine with an afternoon departure.
Day 9: Nyungwe → Huye (Butare)
A shorter 1.5-hour drive south. Spend the afternoon at the National Museum of Rwanda and, if you have time, detour to the old royal palace at Nyanza. This is a low-key day to recharge before the final stretch home.
Day 10: Huye → Kigali
The final leg back to the capital, around 2.5 hours on good roads. Leave a buffer for fuel, a last coffee stop, or returning your rental car with time to spare before your flight.
Prefer a Safari Over Nyungwe?
If wildlife matters more to you than rainforest, replace Days 7–9 with a 2-day detour east to Akagera National Park instead of heading to Nyungwe. It’s roughly 3 hours from Kigali, so this version works best as a loop: Kigali → Musanze → Lake Kivu → back through Kigali → Akagera → Kigali. A Few Trip-Wide Tips
- Fuel up before every park. Stations thin out fast once you leave the main towns.
- Book Musanze and Nyungwe lodging early — rooms are limited and fill up in peak season.
- Carry cash. ATMs are scarce past the bigger towns, and small guesthouses often don’t take cards.
