Volcanoes National Park

Tucked away in Rwanda’s dramatic far northwest, Volcanoes National Park proudly guards the breathtaking slopes of a truly awe-inspiring mountain range — a vital and sacred sanctuary for the critically endangered mountain gorilla and a richly diverse tapestry of ecosystems, spanning ancient bamboo groves, dense evergreen forests, open rolling grasslands, tranquil swamps, and sweeping heathlands.

The park draws its powerful and evocative name from the magnificent chain of dormant volcanoes forming the legendary Virunga Massif: the towering Karisimbi, reigning supreme at an impressive 4,507 meters; the enchanting Bisoke, crowned by a stunning emerald crater lake; and the equally majestic and commanding peaks of Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura.

Venturing through the hauntingly beautiful misty rainforest to come face to face with the rare and magnificent mountain gorilla is a profoundly life-changing experience — made even more extraordinary by the glorious symphony of 200 vibrantly colourful bird species and the endlessly charming golden monkeys playfully weaving through the ancient trees.

Within the park’s remarkable boundaries, visitors can also immerse themselves in the mystical Buhanga Eco-Park, steeped in centuries of captivating Rwandan folklore, and venture deep into the extraordinary Musanze Caves, dramatically carved by powerful volcanic forces some 62 million years ago. From exhilarating hiking and peaceful canoeing to thrilling mountain biking and enriching cultural village visits, the park promises boundless adventure and genuine discovery for every type of traveler.

For the trek, sturdy and comfortable clothing paired with solid, reliable walking shoes are strongly recommended. Should the rain arrive, a pair of practical gaiters and a light waterproof jacket will prove invaluable companions on the trail.
