Nyungwe National Park
Nyungwe Forest National Park, one of Africa’s oldest and most gloriously unspoiled rainforests, stands as a living and breathing treasure of extraordinary biodiversity and breathtaking natural beauty. Nestled intimately within Rwanda’s mountainous and mist-draped southwest, this ancient and magnificent forest unfolds gracefully across rolling hills and deeply atmospheric valleys, offering a vital sanctuary for remarkable wildlife and an irresistible haven for passionate adventure seekers.
The forest shelters a thriving and captivating population of chimpanzees alongside 12 other fascinating primate species, including the elusive L’Hoest’s monkey and the endlessly charming golden monkey — both found exclusively within the uniquely rich and celebrated Albertine Rift. As you venture deeper along its winding network of trails, these extraordinary creatures may reveal themselves leaping effortlessly through the towering trees, or announce their presence through distant and haunting calls echoing magically throughout the dense forest canopy.
Nyungwe Forest National Park equally reigns as an absolute paradise for devoted bird lovers, proudly boasting an astonishing 300 bird species — many of them endemic — alongside a dazzling kaleidoscope of colourful butterflies and rare orchids in full bloom. For those with a hunger for adventure, the park proudly features East Africa’s only canopy walkway — a breathtaking and exhilarating suspension bridge delivering sweeping panoramic views high above the ancient treetops. Hikers are spoiled for choice across a wonderful variety of scenic trails leading to hidden cascading waterfalls, tranquil picnic spots, and dramatic lookout points commanding sweeping and unforgettable views across the forest and far beyond.
Whether you are tracking chimpanzees through the undergrowth, marvelling at rare and vibrantly coloured birds, or simply surrendering to the serene and timeless beauty of the rainforest, Nyungwe promises a deeply moving and utterly unforgettable journey into the very soul of Rwanda’s most precious natural heritage.
What to Wear: Light, breathable clothing in neutral or earthy tones is strongly recommended for all forest trails. Sturdy, ankle-supporting walking shoes are an absolute must, as paths can be steep, uneven, and slippery in places. Long-sleeved shirts and long trousers are highly advisable, offering reliable protection against insects and dense forest vegetation throughout the trek. Given Nyungwe’s famously misty and frequently wet conditions, a lightweight waterproof jacket and a pair of dependable gaiters are essential companions — keeping you dry, comfortable, and completely prepared for every magical twist and turn the forest has to offer.
