Understanding Lake Kivu's Three Main Towns

Karongi (Kibuye), roughly midway along the lake, is smaller and, in the view of many travelers, the most scenic of the three: a quiet town built directly on the shoreline with island-hopping boat trips and a more relaxed pace.

Driving Distances and Times From Kigali

Treat these as planning estimates, not guarantees. Rwanda's national speed limit of 60 km/h on most roads, combined with hilly terrain and occasional traffic leaving Kigali, means actual drive times can run longer than a straight-line calculation would suggest.

Route 1: Kigali to Rubavu (Gisenyi)

This route largely follows the same road used for gorilla trekking trips, continuing past Musanze before turning toward the lake. The road is sealed for the full distance and is in good condition, passing through highland scenery as it descends toward the lakeshore.

Good to know: Rubavu is only about 1.5 hours from Musanze, which makes it an easy add-on to a gorilla trekking itinerary rather than a separate trip. Many travelers drive Kigali to Musanze, trek, then continue to Rubavu for a day or two of lakeside rest before returning to Kigali or flying out.

Route 2: Self-Drive or With Driver Kigali to Karongi (Kibuye)

This is the most direct route to the lake, heading west from Kigali through Muhanga and Ngororero before descending to the shoreline at Karongi. The road is sealed and in decent condition for the full drive, winding through pine- and eucalyptus-covered hills that are worth the trip in their own right.

Good to know: Because it's the shortest and most direct drive of the three, Karongi is a strong choice for travelers with limited time who still want a genuine lakeside stop, or for a two-to-three-day loop out of Kigali without committing a full day each way to driving.

Route 3: Self-Drive or With Driver Kigali to Rusizi (Cyangugu)

The longest of the three drives, this route heads south through Huye and continues through or alongside Nyungwe Forest National Park before reaching Rusizi at the lake's southern tip. Given the distance and the winding forest road through Nyungwe, this is a full-day drive rather than a quick trip.

Good to know: Rusizi makes the most sense as an extension of a Nyungwe Forest visit rather than a dedicated Lake Kivu trip. If chimpanzee trekking or the canopy walkway is on your itinerary, adding a night in Rusizi afterward is a natural next step.

Important: Don't Rely on the Lakeshore Road Between Towns

A common mistake is assuming you can simply drive along the shoreline from one Lake Kivu town to another, since they all sit on the same lake. In practice, the coastal road connecting Karongi and Rubavu, part of the long-distance Congo Nile Trail hiking and cycling route, is in poor condition for vehicles, and several bridges along it have been damaged, requiring long detours for cars.

This road is popular with cyclists and hikers tackling the Congo Nile Trail over multiple days, but it is not a practical or recommended route for a standard self-drive car trip between towns. If you want to visit more than one Lake Kivu town in a single trip, the more reliable approach is to return toward Kigali and take the separate direct road to your next destination, rather than attempting the shoreline connection. A 4x4 can manage parts of the northern section, but this should not be treated as a routine driving route.

What Vehicle Should You Rent?
