Day 1: Arrive in Kigali
Pick up your rental car at Kigali International Airport or have it delivered to your hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring the city — visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, browse the Kimironko Market, and enjoy coffee at one of Kigali's specialty cafés. Overnight in Kigali.
Day 2: Kigali to Musanze (Volcanoes National Park)
Drive north to Musanze (approximately 2 hours). Check in at your lodge and prepare for the next day's gorilla trekking. In the afternoon, visit the Musanze Caves or the Twin Lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking
Begin your gorilla trekking experience early in the morning at Volcanoes National Park. Spend an unforgettable hour with a mountain gorilla family. In the afternoon, consider a golden monkey trek or relax at your lodge. Overnight in Musanze.
Day 4: Musanze to Gisenyi (Lake Kivu)
Drive west to Gisenyi on the shores of Lake Kivu (about 1.5 hours). Enjoy the lakeside beaches, take a boat trip, or simply relax. The drive itself is beautiful, winding through terraced hills and banana plantations. Overnight in Gisenyi.
Day 5: Gisenyi to Nyungwe Forest
Drive south along the stunning Lake Kivu shoreline through Kibuye and Kamembe to Nyungwe Forest National Park (approximately 5–6 hours with stops). This is one of the most scenic drives in all of Africa. Overnight near Nyungwe.
Day 6: Nyungwe Forest — Chimpanzee Tracking & Canopy Walk
Start early with a chimpanzee tracking experience in the ancient rainforest. In the afternoon, walk the famous Canopy Walkway — a suspension bridge 50 meters above the forest floor. Overnight near Nyungwe.
Day 7: Nyungwe to Kigali (via Huye)
Drive back to Kigali (approximately 5 hours). Stop in Huye to visit the Ethnographic Museum and enjoy lunch. Arrive in Kigali in the afternoon, return your rental car, and catch your flight home.
Alternative: Add Akagera Safari
If you have extra days, extend your trip with 2 nights at Akagera National Park for a Big Five safari experience. Akagera is about 2.5 hours east of Kigali and offers excellent game drives with lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, and zebras.
Road Trip Tips

- Fill up on fuel in major towns; stations are sparse near national parks.
