FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Car Hire in Rwanda

Yes, foreign visitors need a valid international driving permit (IDP) alongside their home country licence. If you do not have an IDP, we recommend hiring a car with one of our professional drivers instead. Rwandan citizens and residents can drive with a valid Rwandan licence.

Rwanda drives on the right-hand side of the road. All our vehicles are left-hand drive. If you are coming from a country that drives on the left (such as the UK, Kenya, or Uganda), most visitors adapt quickly — and our drivers are always available if you prefer not to self-drive.

Yes, cross-border travel is available with a permit costing $50 to $150 depending on the destination. Popular cross-border routes include Kigali to Kampala (Uganda), Kigali to Bujumbura (Burundi), and Rwanda to Tanzania via Rusumo Falls. Let us know your plans when booking and we will arrange the necessary paperwork.

Rwanda has some of the best roads in East Africa. The main highways connecting Kigali to Musanze, Huye, Rubavu, and Rusizi are fully tarmacked and well-maintained. Roads inside national parks are unpaved but manageable with a 4x4. Rwanda is also one of the safest countries in Africa, with very low crime rates and a strong police presence on major routes.

Our minimum rental period is one day (24 hours). For the best value, consider weekly or monthly rentals which come with significant discounts — up to 25% off the daily rate for monthly bookings. Half-day airport transfers are also available on request.

All vehicles come with third-party liability insurance. In the event of an accident, call us immediately at +250 788 439 022. Do not move the vehicle until police arrive and file a report. Full comprehensive insurance covering vehicle damage is available as an optional add-on for an additional fee.
