  • Road: RN1 south to Muhanga, then RN1 to Huye, then RN6 west to Nyungwe

Tea Plantations

Between Huye and Nyungwe, the road winds through Rwanda's largest tea estates. Stop for photos of the brilliant green hillsides.

Uwinka Visitor Centre

The main trailhead inside Nyungwe. Start the canopy walk here (60 m above the forest floor) or begin a chimpanzee tracking trek.

What to Do in Nyungwe

Chimpanzee Trekking

Track habituated chimpanzees through the rainforest canopy. Permits cost $90 and treks start at 05:00 from Uwinka or Cyamudongo.

Canopy Walkway

Walk 200 m across a suspension bridge 60 m above the forest floor. One of only a handful of canopy walks in Africa.

Colobus Monkeys

Nyungwe hosts the largest troop of Angolan colobus monkeys in Africa — over 400 individuals. Tracking permits cost $60.

Birding

Over 300 bird species including 27 Albertine Rift endemics. Nyungwe is Rwanda's top birding destination.
