Car Rental Lake Kivu

Lake Kivu is Africa's sixth largest lake, stretching 90 km along Rwanda's western border with the DRC. The lakeside road from Rubavu in the north to Rusizi in the south is one of the continent's most scenic drives -- 227 km of hairpin turns, fishing villages, tea plantations, and volcanic hot springs. A rental car is the best way to experience it.

Key Stops

Where to Stop on the Lake Kivu Road

Rubavu / Gisenyi

Sandy beaches, hot springs, and the Congo border. Rwanda's lakeside resort town and the northern starting point of the Kivu circuit. See our Rubavu guide.

Kibuye / Karongi

The quiet midpoint of the lake. Karongi has a sheltered bay dotted with green islands, a genocide memorial on a peninsula, and some of the best lakeside lodges. Excellent for a two-night stop.

Kamembe / Rusizi

Rwanda's southwestern corner. Visit Rusizi National Park for hippos and crocodiles in the Rusizi River delta, then cross to Bukavu (DRC) or continue east to Nyungwe Forest.

Tea Plantations

The hills above Nyamasheke and Karongi are blanketed with tea estates. Several offer guided tours and tastings. The geometric patterns of manicured tea bushes against the lake backdrop are unforgettable.

Hot Springs

Volcanic hot springs appear at several points along the shore, most accessibly near Gisenyi in the north. The mineral-rich water ranges from warm to scalding -- locals will show you the safe spots.

Fishing Villages

Dozens of small fishing communities line the shore. Stop to watch the sambaza (sardine) catch come in at dawn, buy smoked fish, or arrange a boat ride to one of the lake's 15 islands.

Vehicles

  • With driver: If you want to enjoy the views without worrying about the road, our experienced drivers know every curve. From $60/day for vehicle + driver.
  • Fuel planning: Fill up in Rubavu, Karongi, and Rusizi. There are no reliable stations between these towns.

FAQ

Lake Kivu Car Rental — FAQ

A 4x4 is strongly recommended. While the Kigali-Rubavu and Rusizi-Kigali legs are fully tarmacked, the lakeside road between Rubavu and Rusizi has unpaved sections with steep inclines. A RAV4 can manage in dry season with careful driving, but a Land Cruiser or Prado is the safer choice year-round.

A minimum of 4 days, but 5-7 days is ideal. The lakeside road demands slow, attentive driving, and rushing defeats the purpose. Budget two nights in Rubavu, two in Karongi, and one in Rusizi for a relaxed pace. A weekly rental rate makes this very affordable.

Reliable fuel stations are in Rubavu, Karongi, and Rusizi. Between these towns, fuel availability is unpredictable -- small roadside sellers offer jerrycans at a premium. Always fill your tank before leaving one of the three main towns. A full tank in a RAV4 covers roughly 500 km; in a Land Cruiser, about 350 km.

No. The lakeside road has sharp, unlit switchbacks, no guardrails in many sections, and occasional pedestrians and cyclists after dark. Plan your driving so you arrive at your destination before sunset (around 18:00 year-round near the equator). Night driving is fine on the tarmacked Kigali-Rubavu highway.

Absolutely. Start in Musanze for gorilla trekking, then drive west to Rubavu (1.5 hrs) to begin the lakeside circuit. This is one of Rwanda's most popular multi-day road trip combinations and works perfectly with a 7-day rental.

The dry seasons (June-September and mid-December to February) offer the best road conditions and clearest views. The long rains (March-May) make unpaved sections muddy and slow -- a 4x4 is essential during this period. October-November (short rains) is manageable with a 4x4. Lake Kivu's climate is pleasant year-round at 1,460 m elevation.
