Park Rules & Safety

  • Maximum speed: 40 km/h on all park tracks
  • Stay inside your vehicle at all times except at designated picnic sites
  • Do not feed or approach wildlife
  • Keep windows up when near large animals
  • Park gates open at 6:00 AM, last entry at 6:00 PM

Best Practices

  • Best times: early morning (6--9 AM) and late afternoon (4--6 PM) for active wildlife
  • Fuel: fill up in Kayonza -- no fuel inside the park
  • Bring binoculars, sunscreen, water, and snacks
  • Download the Akagera park map from their website or get one at the gate
  • Allow a full day minimum; two days is ideal for both north and south sectors

Suggested 2--3 Day Akagera Itinerary

Day 1: Southern Sector

  • Depart Kigali early morning, arrive at South Gate by 8:30 AM
  • Game drive through the southern plains -- look for elephants, giraffes, and buffalo
  • Afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema (hippos, crocs, waterbirds)
  • Overnight at Ruzizi Tented Lodge or Akagera Game Lodge

Day 2: Northern Sector

  • Early morning game drive north -- best chance for lion and rhino sightings
  • Visit the highland ridges for panoramic views of the park and lakes
  • Birding stops at papyrus swamps (shoebill territory)
  • Return to lodge or continue to Karenge Bush Camp for a wilderness night

Day 3: Sunrise Drive & Return

  • Final sunrise game drive -- golden light, calm animals, great photography
  • Exit via South or North Gate and drive back to Kigali (2.5 hours)
  • Option: continue east to the Tanzania border or north to Volcanoes National Park

Akagera Car Rental — FAQ

Yes. Akagera is the only national park in Rwanda that allows self-drive safari. You can explore the park's network of game-drive tracks in your own rental vehicle. A 4x4 is strongly recommended, though some main tracks are accessible by AWD vehicles like the RAV4.

A 4x4 vehicle such as a Land Cruiser or Safari Land Cruiser is ideal. The park has both paved main tracks and rougher secondary roads. A RAV4 can handle the main routes in dry season, but for full park access a proper 4x4 is essential.

Yes. Akagera has designated campsites at Shakani, Mutumba Hills, and near Lake Shakani. You need to book in advance through African Parks. The park also has Ruzizi Tented Lodge, Karenge Bush Camp, and Akagera Game Lodge for those who prefer lodges.

The dry seasons (June--September and December--February) offer the best game viewing as animals gather around water sources. However, Akagera is a year-round destination. The wet season (March--May) brings lush landscapes and excellent birding.

We recommend at least two days to explore both the southern plains and northern highlands. A single day is possible but rushed. Three days allows for morning and afternoon game drives, a boat safari on Lake Ihema, and a guided night drive.
