Northern Route via Musanze (3 hours)

The faster option at 157 km. Take the RN4 north through Musanze, then head west on the RN8 descending to Lake Kivu. Well-paved throughout with dramatic mountain scenery. This is the most popular route for travellers combining gorilla trekking with a lakeside holiday.

Southern Scenic Route via Kibuye (4+ hours)

The longer but more scenic option at roughly 200 km. Drive west through Muhanga to Karongi (Kibuye) on Lake Kivu, then follow the stunning lakeside road north to Gisenyi. Winding mountain roads with breathtaking views over the lake at every turn.
