1. Volcanoes National Park
Home to the famous mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park in Musanze is Rwanda's most iconic destination. The drive from Kigali takes about 2 hours on excellent roads. Book gorilla trekking permits well in advance — they sell out months ahead.
2. Akagera National Park
Rwanda's only savanna park offers Big Five safari experiences. Located 2.5 hours east of Kigali, Akagera is perfect for a 2–3 day self-drive safari. Spot lions, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, hippos, and hundreds of bird species.
3. Lake Kivu
Africa's sixth-largest lake stretches along Rwanda's western border. Drive the stunning lakeside road connecting Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu for one of the most beautiful road trips in East Africa. Enjoy beaches, boat trips, and island excursions.
4. Nyungwe Forest National Park
One of Africa's oldest rainforests, Nyungwe is home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and the famous canopy walkway. The drive from Kigali takes about 5 hours through breathtaking scenery.
5. Kigali City
Don't skip the capital. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, explore Kimironko Market, enjoy the vibrant restaurant and café scene, and discover one of Africa's cleanest and safest cities.
6. Gisenyi (Rubavu)
A lakeside town on the northern shore of Lake Kivu, Gisenyi offers sandy beaches, hot springs, and a relaxed atmosphere. It's just 1.5 hours from Musanze, making it easy to combine with gorilla trekking.
7. Huye (Butare)
Rwanda's cultural and academic capital. Visit the Ethnographic Museum, one of the best museums in East Africa, and explore the University of Rwanda campus. About 2.5 hours south of Kigali.
8. Twin Lakes: Burera and Ruhondo
These stunning twin lakes near Musanze are surrounded by terraced hills and volcanic peaks. A scenic drive through rural Rwanda at its most beautiful. Great for canoeing and nature walks.
9. King's Palace Museum (Nyanza)
The reconstructed royal palace in Nyanza offers a fascinating look into Rwanda's pre-colonial history. The drive from Kigali is about 2 hours, passing through rolling countryside.
10. Congo Nile Trail
A multi-day hiking and driving route along Lake Kivu's eastern shore, connecting Gisenyi to Cyangugu. The trail passes through villages, coffee plantations, and offers stunning lake views at every turn. Sections are drivable by 4×4.
Planning Your Road Trip
To visit all 10 destinations, plan at least 10–14 days. A Toyota RAV4 handles most routes, but a Land Cruiser Prado or 4×4 is recommended for Akagera, Nyungwe, and the Congo Nile Trail. Book your rental car in Kigali and start your adventure from there.
