Canopy Walkway
Suspended high above a deep ravine in the lush montane rainforest of Nyungwe National Park, the Canopy Walkway offers a thrilling bird’s-eye view of the ancient treetops and the vibrant wildlife that calls them home.
This 160-meter-long, 70-meter-high suspension bridge is a highlight of the park and can be accessed through a guided hike along the scenic Igishigishigi Trail, or by extending the adventure on the Imbaraga or Umuyove trails.
Nyungwe Forest, which survived the last ice age, is a treasure trove of biodiversity. As you make the one-hour trek from Uwinka Reception Centre to the walkway, you’ll encounter a kaleidoscope of butterflies, delicate orchids, and brilliantly coloured birds, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.
With 13 primate species inhabiting the park, an unexpected sighting is always possible along the trail. However, those keen to observe them up close should consider booking a dedicated primate tracking experience.
Do note, the forest’s steep trails are well maintained but can get muddy after rainfall, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
