    King's Palace

The King’s Palace, a meticulous reconstruction of the traditional royal residence, stands as a symbol of Rwanda’s rich history, with its thatched roof crafted in the shape of a beehive.

Historically, Nyanza was the heart of Rwanda, a place steeped in power struggles and legendary battles. According to oral tradition, it was the epicenter of the kingdom’s most significant events.

For centuries, the Rwandan monarchy was itinerant, moving the royal court between various locations. When the monarchy finally chose a permanent home, Nyanza emerged as the clear choice. At its height, the capital was home to over 2,000 people, living in huts built using the same traditional methods that are replicated here.

In the palace’s backyards, a herd of long-horned Inyambo cattle graze peacefully. These majestic animals, descendants of the royal herd, are carefully tended by their keepers, who sing to them as part of a cherished tradition passed down through generations.

The Inyambo cattle, originally from the Ankole breed, held great ceremonial significance, often decorated with intricate jewelry and trained to follow the movements of their keepers in dignified processions to honor the king.

While Rwanda’s monarchy ended in 1962 with the country’s independence, the breeding and care of Inyambo continue under the supervision of the Rwanda Agriculture Board, preserving this unique cultural legacy.

A visit to the King’s Palace can be complemented by a trip to the nearby Ethnographic Museum in Huye, which houses one of the finest ethnographic collections in Africa, providing a deeper understanding of Rwanda’s vibrant cultural history.
