Volcanoes National Park
Nestled in Rwanda’s far northwest, Volcanoes National Park safeguards the dramatic slopes of this awe-inspiring mountain range — a sanctuary for the endangered mountain gorilla and a vibrant blend of ecosystems, from bamboo and evergreen forests to open grasslands, swamps, and heathlands.
The park takes its name from the chain of dormant volcanoes that form the Virunga Massif: Karisimbi, the tallest at 4,507 meters; Bisoke with its emerald crater lake; and the majestic peaks of Sabinyo, Gahinga, and Muhabura.
Trekking through the misty rainforest to encounter the rare mountain gorilla is an unforgettable experience, made even richer by the symphony of 200 colorful bird species and the playful golden monkeys hidden among the trees.
Within Volcanoes National Park, you can also explore Buhanga Eco-Park, steeped in Rwanda’s ancient folklore, and venture into the Musanze Caves, carved 62 million years ago by volcanic forces. From hiking and canoeing to mountain biking and cultural village visits, the park offers adventure and discovery for every traveler.
What to Wear: Sturdy clothing and solid walking shoes. In case of rain, gaiters and a lightweight waterproof will come in useful.
