Typical Gorilla Trekking Itinerary

Day 1 — Kigali to Musanze

We pick you up from Kigali Airport or hotel. Drive 2.5 hours to Musanze via the scenic northern route. Check in to your lodge near Volcanoes NP. Optional: visit Musanze Caves or Buhanga Eco-Park.

Day 2 — Gorilla Trekking

Early morning drive to Kinigi park HQ for briefing at 7 AM. Trek into the forest with your guide to meet a habituated gorilla family. Spend 1 magical hour with the gorillas. Return to the lodge. Optional: golden monkey tracking in the afternoon.

Day 3 — Return to Kigali or Continue

Drive back to Kigali for your flight, or continue to Lake Kivu (3 hrs), Akagera NP (4.5 hrs), or Nyungwe Forest (6 hrs).

Routes to Volcanoes National Park

From Kigali

116 km · 2.5 hrs · Tarmac

The most common route. Take the RN4 north through Rulindo and Gakenke to Musanze, then west to Kinigi. Smooth tarmac the entire way until the final park access road.

From Lake Kivu (Rubavu)

62 km · 1.5 hrs · Tarmac

A scenic drive along the foothills of the Virunga volcanoes. Combine a Rubavu beach stay with gorilla trekking — a popular itinerary.

From Akagera NP

280 km · 4.5 hrs · Tarmac

Cross Rwanda east to west. A full-day drive, but a rewarding safari combo — Big Five in Akagera, gorillas in Volcanoes. We recommend an overnight stop in Kigali.

We recommend a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 or Land Cruiser Prado. Both are 4×4 vehicles with excellent ground clearance for the park access roads. The Prado is the best value option for couples and small groups.

Yes, the main road from Kigali to Musanze is excellent tarmac. However, we strongly recommend hiring a driver — the park access roads can be tricky, parking at the HQ is limited, and your driver waits while you trek. A driver costs just $30–$50/day extra.

Volcanoes National Park HQ at Kinigi is about 116 km from Kigali — roughly 2.5 hours by car on a good tarmac road. We recommend arriving the afternoon before your trek and staying at a lodge near the park.
